The Blog in the Marketing Fog   “What part of Y’all don’t Y’all Understand?” – It’s a BIG “Hey Y’all” from all of us as we have launched the NEW Visit South Website! It’s been hours and late nights, weekends and a lot of work. But the team involved has been relentless and driven and fiddle-dee-dee we got it done! Come feast your eyes on amazing visuals, incredible content and a whole lotta’ South for Your Mouth!   Did we mention the FOOD? Things We are Loving Right Now – Well not really. For travel marketers like us, as soon as we master Google’s latest hurdle to jump through they do what they always do and make the hurdle a little higher and the flames a little hotter. Their latest move involves restacking travel search returns on mobile devices making it almost impossible for users to locate you the organic and natural way via SEO that we have all grown to maneuver. In fact, Google has just road-blocked (literally and figuratively) any option marketers have to get their travel wares out there. Our trusted friends at Search Engine Land (the Danny Sullivan group, we love him!) has more. Say What? – Thanks to the successful trending of hashtag coagulants (yep, these things: #) related to the 2016 Election, hit TV shows like The Bachelor, Walking Dead, and trends like “Dabbing” there is now a new nemesis on the horizon; the “Hash-Hostage,” or “SPAM-Jackers” (Or “Fleas” as we call them.) Hash-Hostage tricks are the trolls that post un-related ads, SPAM, Twitter Porn and other unexpected content using the coagulant trend...

The Blog in the Marketing Fog   “What part of Y’all don’t Y’all Understand?” – It’s 4th Quarter and it’s usually the busiest quarter for folks like us. This year is no exception; new business, old business, first quarter plans and 2016 expansion are all the things we are head’s down on. We are so appreciative of our growing product & services list and new clients that we are getting to know that sometimes we forget to thank each other for being in the trenches together. Laughter heard up and down the halls, video conference meetings and cell phone calls that get us jumping out of our chairs are only part of it. Some days are easier than others but in this time of giving Thanks, we are Thankful for one another and the collaboration it takes to keep the bus moving forward. Full calendars, 100 new emails and piles of work mounting can always be smoothed away by saying “Thanks for being there” to our colleagues (and for a few of us, buying each other a beer!) As we look forward to breaking bread with loved ones don’t forget to thank each other for a job well done.   🙂 Things We are Loving Right Now – Social Media Sponsored ads are now one of the most effective means of digital advertising, so says eMarketer. “Social media users say sponsored social messages are equally—if not more—effective as other types of marketing tactics, according to the results of a July 2015 survey. Even newer platforms such as Periscope and Snapchat ranked higher than more mature tactics like search or print...

“What part of Y’all don’t Y’all Understand?” – How will our sassy, Southern ways play out in Chi-town? Well, we will find out soon as our Chief Digital Officer, Kathleen Stockham is set to keynote to a room full of lawyers as an invited speaker to the ABA National convention. “Tracking People Across the Web” is a very controversial topic in a lot of legal hallways and problematic to compliance and privacy attorneys everywhere. Kathleen will be joined by an attorney from the Federal Trade Commission and 4 other Privacy and Compliance counsel to debate just “how much is too much” tracking across all platforms including social media. Are you entitled to Privacy in your own Digital Footprint? (Let’s hope she makes it out of Chicago alive! But she better bring back some pizza too!) Things We are Loving Right Now – We went to 2 Big conferences in 1 week (Content Marketing World and INBOUND) and we took a lot of notes! But most importantly we listened to folks both on the stage and at our roundtables talk a lot about Content Marketing. What’s “right,” what is “best practice” and what “best format” is. The answer is… ALL of it! The primary theme we kept hearing over and over is HAVE   A   STRATEGY!!! The actual “mechanics” of content marketing vary from organization to organization and brand to brand, but the starting point is a strategy that clearly defines goals and audiences attempted and even a “Plan B” when your preferred strategy fails. Do you have a “failover” strategy? Are you willing to scrap your plans and start over?...

September 2015 “What part of Y’all don’t Y’all Understand?” – Unapologetically Southern; that’s pretty much how we describe ourselves and at some point each one of us here at Compass Media have found ourselves making that clarification to someone else (typically to one of those “big city” agency types.) And while the description of being THE agency for “Southern Lifestyle, Leisure, Tourism and Travel” is a total mouthful we mostly “land the plane” in describing ourselves by just naming our clients. (Yeah, you know who you are…) So we went a step further…we birthed a new website. After labor pains, 5pm beers and polite squalls over copy points we just went ahead and put it all out there, like a Country Ham at a picnic. We tried hard to be all “New York/big agency/too cool” sounding but you know it just didn’t really fit in well; sort of like wearing a tube top to church. In the words of our Founder, Gary Ellis; “Why walk the horse down the street when clearly he just wants gallop in his own direction.” So we just let that horse roam, and clearly he went his own way. Things We are Loving Right Now – Because social media is the modern man’s gossip fence we see that Facebook has put a premium on just how darned far your Facebook posts go in the land of “Viral.” It’s not just “Gee, my Facebook post got 100 Likes and 10 shares.” Nawwww… Facebook wants to show you just how “viral” really works. In the “View Insights” module for each post, Facebook now has “Reach” and...
